Halloween is the season for ghosts, ghouls and things that go bump in the night. But at Downtown Creative Studios, we know the real horrors aren’t hiding in haunted houses. They’re happening in the music room.

From mysteriously untuned guitars to the terrifying realisation that you’ve become an admin person, here are five things that haunt every music teacher.

1. The Student Who Doesn’t Show Up

It’s 4:00 pm. Your next lesson is due to start.

It’s 4:05 pm.

You’re checking the clock. You’re checking your emails. You’re wondering if they’ve been abducted by ghosts.

And then, just as you’re about to give up hope, you hear footsteps.

2. “But I Tuned My Guitar Last Week?”

Did you know, your guitar probably needs a tune, everytime you pick it up to play it?

Unfortunately, guitars are not vampires. They don’t live forever, and they certainly don’t stay in tune forever.

Humidity, temperature, playing and the general chaos of life all have other plans.

3. The Song Starts… But the Mic Is Muted

The student is ready. The backing track is queued. The performance is about to begin.

They open their mouth to sing.

Nothing.

The microphone is muted.

Cue the frantic button pressing, the confused staring and the existential crisis of a teacher who was absolutely certain everything was ready.

4. The Two Most Terrifying Words in Music

“Please turn it down.”

Every music teacher knows the moment. The drummer is in the zone. The guitarist has discovered distortion. The singer is giving it everything they’ve got.

And somewhere in the building, a perfectly reasonable volume level has become a distant memory.

We love enthusiasm. We love energy. We love big performances, but sometimes, the neighbours have other ideas.

5. The Creative Soul Forced to Do Admin

You became a music teacher because you love music.

You love the creativity, the songwriting, the performances, the lightbulb moments when a student finally nails that tricky chord.

You did not dream of spreadsheets, invoices, scheduling, emails, lesson notes and approximately 47 tabs open on your computer.

And yet, here you are.

A creative soul trapped in an administrative nightmare! If you need us, we’ll be at the desk, quietly haunting our own inbox.

Happy Halloween from Downtown Creative Studios!

Thankfully, not everything that happens in a music studio is terrifying. There’s nothing spooky about a student finding their voice, learning a new skill or discovering a song they absolutely love.

Happy Halloween from our slightly haunted music studio to yours!
