Whether you’re just starting out, preparing for a performance or singing for the sheer joy of it, developing good vocal habits can make a big difference.

Miss Kathleen recently shared her Top 5 Singing Tips on Instagram, and we’ve brought them together here so you can refer back to them whenever you need a little vocal refresher!

1. Stay hydrated

Your vocal folds need moisture to work efficiently, so staying hydrated is one of the simplest ways to look after your voice.

Keep a water bottle handy throughout the day. One with a straw is even better, as you can also use it for SOVT (Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract) exercises.

During the drier months, try using a cool-mist humidifier in your bedroom while you sleep to help add moisture to the air.

2. Don’t skip the warm-up

Your voice needs warming up just like your muscles do before exercise!

A vocal warm-up helps prepare your voice for singing and allows you to get the best out of your performance.

Short on time? Even a few sirens, lip bubbles or gentle humming exercises can make a difference. Make warming up part of your routine, particularly before rehearsals and performances.

3. Relax and release tension

Too much tension can make singing much harder than it needs to be. Pay attention to your shoulders, neck and jaw, particularly when tackling challenging sections or high notes.

If you notice yourself tensing up, take a moment to relax, reset and try again. A relaxed body makes it much easier to sing comfortably.

4. Plan your breaths

Ever run out of air halfway through a lyric? Planning your breathing can help!

When learning a new song, mark on your lyrics where you intend to take a breath. This is especially helpful when navigating longer phrases or holding sustained notes.

Planning ahead helps you manage your airflow and deliver each phrase with greater control and confidence.

5. Just do it!

Singing is supposed to be enjoyed, so don’t waste too much time worrying about being perfect.

Want to get up on stage? Give it a go! Want to try a challenging new song? Go for it!

Confidence comes from having a go, making mistakes and learning along the way. You don’t have to be perfect to be a great performer.

At Downtown Creative Studios, we believe music should be about joy, creativity and having fun. So take a breath, relax those shoulders and enjoy singing!
