Why Choose Local Lessons?

Hear from our families, why Downtown Creative is the right local music school for you!

My sons have really developed their love of music here, across multiple instruments (drums, guitar and even electronic). The teachers are fantastic as are the owners Sam & Kathleen. They've always connected well with my kids. I love how they embrace whatever songs my children want to learn, rather than forcing pieces they don’t connect with. The recitals have also been such a huge confidence boost. Couldn’t recommend the team more highly!

FAQs

What is the best instrument to start with?
For many young beginners, piano is an excellent first instrument. It’s visual, easy to make sound on, and provides a strong foundation in music theory. That said, the best instrument is the one your child is most excited about — whether that’s guitar, drums, singing, or something else. Passion and enjoyment are the keys to long-term progress!

What age can children start private music lessons?
Most children are ready to begin around ages 5–6, though this varies from child to child. Some younger students thrive with early exposure to piano or voice, while others benefit from waiting until they are a little older. We’re always happy to discuss your child’s readiness and recommend the best starting point.

How long should music lessons be?
For primary school students, 30-minute lessons are ideal to keep focus and engagement high. Teens and adults often benefit from longer lessons — 45 minutes to 1 hour — which allow more time to refine technique, learn repertoire, and build strong practice habits.

How much practice is recommended?
For beginners, we suggest at least 10–15 minutes, 3 times per week. This consistency helps students develop skills and confidence. As students progress, practice often becomes more enjoyable — and daily playing becomes a natural part of their routine.

Do you teach adults as well as children?
Absolutely! We welcome students of all ages. Our teachers tailor lessons to each individual, whether you’re a complete beginner, returning after a break, or looking to refine your skills. It’s never too late to start learning music.

Can I start halfway through the term?

You can start your lessons anytime! We welcome new students all year round. You will still be billed the weekly rate if you attend your lessons weekly.
