Did you know you don’t have to be a soloist?

Music can be a team sport, bringing kids together to create something great. We’re so excited to be introducing our monthly Pajama Jams to the Downtown schedule this month, giving kids the opportunity to play together in a low-pressure environment and experience the joy of making music with others.

Here are our top five benefits of playing music together.

1. Builds teamwork and collaboration

Playing music together teaches students how to listen to others, work towards a shared goal and understand how their individual part contributes to the whole group.

They learn to share ideas, consider other people’s ideas, compromise and work together to create something they can all be proud of.

2. Improves listening and musical skills

Playing with others develops timing, rhythm, musical awareness and the ability to stay together as an ensemble.

Students have to listen to what is happening around them and respond to it, which can help them become stronger musicians both as a soloist and as part of a group.

3. Boosts confidence

Performing and creating music as part of a group can help children feel capable, valued and proud of what they can achieve. Let’s be honest, it can be a little easier to play in front of people when you’re surrounded by your friends!

You might even find yourself in a band taking to the stage before you know it.

4. Creates friendships and connection

Music becomes a social experience, helping students make friends with others who share their interests.

Playing together can lead to forming bands, collaborating on songs and, hopefully, creating friendships that last well beyond the music lesson.

5. Makes learning more fun and motivating

Playing your favourite songs with other musicians is exciting and rewarding. Bringing a song to life with more than just your own instrument is such a rush!

There’s something special about hearing all the different parts come together and realising that you’ve created something together. It’s the kind of experience that makes kids want to come back and do it all again.
