Getting up on stage for the first time can feel daunting and you might never quite feel like, “I’m ready!”
So, how do you know if you’re ready to perform?
We’ve put together a simple checklist to help you decide.
1. You can make it through something on stage
It doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact, perfection isn’t the point!
Whether you can play a whole song, sing a few lines, or simply make a noise on stage, getting up there is an achievement in itself. Performing in front of people is a completely different skill from playing or singing comfortably at home.
Getting on stage is far more important than nailing every note.
2. You have a supportive audience
Knowing that friends, family or people who are cheering you on will be watching can make a huge difference.
Your first performance should be about having a go, gaining confidence and enjoying the experience — not worrying about whether you’re perfect. A supportive audience will be there to encourage you no matter what happens.
3. You feel nervous
Nervousness is actually a good sign!
It usually means you care about what you’re doing and that the performance is important to you. Feeling a few butterflies before getting on stage is completely normal.
You don’t need to wait until you feel completely calm. Sometimes, being nervous and doing it anyway is exactly how you build confidence.
4. You’re waiting to “feel ready”
The thing is, you might never feel completely ready.
If you keep waiting for that magical moment when you suddenly feel 100% confident, you could be waiting a long time.
You’re often your own harshest critic, and if you listen too closely to that little voice in your head telling you that you’re not good enough yet, you might miss out on doing something amazing.
So if you’re thinking about performing, maybe it’s time to take the leap.
You don’t have to feel ready to start. Sometimes, you become ready by doing it.
