Music is such an important part of early childhood development. Long before children can read music or play an instrument, they are already learning through listening, moving, singing and exploring sound. The good news is that you don’t need to be a musician to nurture your child’s musical development at home — simple, playful activities can make a huge impact.
Here are some easy and fun ways to encourage your little one’s love of music in everyday life!
1. Replace the words to a familiar song
Singing with your child is wonderful for their development. It helps them learn rhythm, melody, language and memory. To build creativity, try changing the words to songs they already know.
For example:
“Twinkle, twinkle, little cat, how I wonder how you meow!”
Take turns making up silly versions together and see what your little one comes up with!
2. Copy Cat
Copying games are fantastic for building musical memory and awareness. Sing a short melody and see if your child can sing it back. Or tap a simple rhythm on the floor or table and encourage them to copy you.
You can also try interactive music videos like Danny Go, which often include fun musical copycat activities.
3. Marching, stomping and clapping
Put on some music and move to the beat together! March, stomp, clap or dance around the room. Rhythm is naturally part of how we walk and talk, and connecting movement to music early on helps children develop a strong sense of beat and coordination.
4. Listen to music and talk about it
One of the most important parts of musical development is simply listening. Explore lots of different styles of music together and talk about what your child likes or doesn’t like.
Ask questions like:
- “Does this song sound happy or sleepy?”
- “Which instrument can you hear?”
- “Does this music make you want to dance or relax?”
Building a love of music early can stay with children for life.
Music should feel joyful, playful and natural — especially in the early years. By singing, listening, moving and creating together, you’re helping your child build confidence, creativity and important developmental skills without them even realising they’re learning.
